Introduction to Yodha
The actor is back as Flight Lt Arun Katyal, an officer in the special Yodha task force, following the success of the film Shershaah, Mission Majnu. There were several gunfights between the Indian Border Security Force and the Bangladesh Armed Rifles during the 2001 Indo-Bangladesh border conflicts.
The Hostage Situation
It’s clear that Arun Katyal can handle any mission or difficulty as he eludes infiltrators trying to cross over. His patriotism and loyalty will really be put to the test, though, when he finds himself in the middle of a hostage situation. He is returning home with the nation’s foremost nuclear scientist when armed terrorists hijack the “Air Hindustan” flight.
A Difficult Choice
Since he appears to be the only one who can escape the situation, he finds himself in a difficult situation: should he take on this dangerous task by himself or should he wait for orders? When he opts for the former, he finds himself in an uncontrollable situation. He has failed to avert the crisis and is held accountable and suspended. But what destroys him is that the special task force his father (Ronit Roy) had created may soon be disbanded.
Personal Struggles
Arun quickly finds himself up against the system—in this case, the State. Not only has he lost his credibility in the workplace, but his personal life is in disarray. His ministry-employed wife Priyamvada Katyal (Raashi Khanna) is torn between following the law and standing by her proud husband, who won’t budge or align.
A Second Chance
Years go by, and he might get the one chance to come back to life. Once more, the disgraced former soldier finds himself in the middle of a hostage situation.
Direction and Execution
Yodha, which was directed by Sagar Ambre and Pushkar Ojha, follows a formula and uses every cliché and cliche possible, no matter how ridiculous it seems at the time, to move the story along. With the help of a grenade that emits tri-colored smoke and a lone ranger, Arun Katyal takes care of every individual and circumstance that posed a threat to the country.
Performance Highlights
Sidharth Malhotra keeps the whole thing together, even as you shake your head at the premise’s ridiculousness and banality. The actor pulls off a convincing portrayal of the corrupted officer, who despite his physical wounds still has a lot of strength in him. He fights well, has a good appearance, and does his best to keep the show alive.
Serving as Laila, the antagonist, gives Disha Patani a chance to finally shed her glitzy persona and have some creative freedom. Endearingly, Raashi Khanna plays the equally proud Priyamvada who looks at marriage as an equal and is by no means pitiful. Unfortunately, for both women’s performances to be recognized, their screen time is limited.
Pacing and Writing
It’s a fast-paced first half that slows down in an overly long second half. Sometimes, the writing is inconsistent and disorganized. Even so, Sidharth Malhotra is the only one who truly owns Yodha, despite all its flaws and the constant stream of neo-patriotic movies.
