Meet the Actor: Matt Damon and His Regretful Decision

Due to the nature of filmmaking and performers’ schedules and workloads, most big stars are unable to accept every project offered to them. Various factors influence these decisions, including compensation and scheduling. However, frequently a celebrity will turn down a movie for unspecified reasons, only to later regret it. This celebrity lost Rs 1400 crore in just ten minutes by turning down the greatest opportunity of his life.

Matt Damon and the Avatar Opportunity

In 2007, James Cameron was working on the ambitious movie Avatar, having previously directed blockbusters like Titanic and The Terminator. He approached Matt Damon to play the leading role in the film. This revelation was disclosed by Damon during a recent chat program, which has since gone viral on social media.

In a video from the interaction, the actor humorously shares with the audience, “I was offered a little movie called Avatar. I said no.” He recalls that when he called Jim Cameron, the director made him an offer to buy 10% of Avatar. The audience laughed along with him as he quipped, “I’m the actor who turned down more money than you will ever meet.”

Ultimately, Avatar made $2.7 billion during its initial run and a total of $2.9 billion, securing its status as the highest-grossing movie ever made. It is estimated that Damon would have earned $290 million (about Rs 1400 crore in 2009) from the film if he had accepted the 10% profit offer. Damon noted that it only took him ten minutes to decline the role, which ultimately went to Sam Worthington, who received 5% of the movie’s proceeds.

The Film Career of Matt Damon

After completing his education, Matt Damon enrolled at Harvard in 1988 but did not graduate, leaving in 1992 without earning a degree. In 1992, Damon made his screen debut in the box office failure Geronimo. Damon and his friend Ben Affleck wrote the critically acclaimed movie Good Will Hunting, in which they both starred, achieving significant commercial success.

Over the next decade, Damon featured in other successful films, including Ocean’s Eleven and the Bourne franchise, solidifying his status among the highest-paid actors in the world. Following his successful run in movies like The Martian, Damon began taking on cameos and supporting roles in major films such as Oppenheimer and Interstellar.
